This elective provides the medical learner with an opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare providers in a community based, Indigenous led, comprehensive primary care program. We provide low barrier, culturally safe clinics for Indigenous people (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) and their families across Toronto, in various partnerships with Indigenous service agencies. Our team includes Family Doctors, Indigenous Midwives, pediatricians, psychiatrists, harm reduction workers, Nurse practitioners and Registered Nurses.
Pre-requisites required:
- Must have completed Indigenous Cultural Safety Training (exception can be made if applicant is FNIM, to be discussed with Indigenous Health Director.)
- Must write a letter of application outlining reasons for wanting to do elective and experience working with Indigenous people in Canada.
Objectives:
- Will be able to understand what culturally safe clinical care for Indigenous people and their families in Toronto looks like
- Will be able to explain specific Social Determinants of Health Impacting Indigenous People in Toronto, including anti-Indigenous racism and colonialism. Will learn about the diversity of Indigenous people in Toronto and the kinship systems of community
- Will work alongside a multidisciplinary team including Indigenous healthcare providers.
